Take a good look at this picture. No, that’s not sunlight or camera flash shining off that Pre – it’s a series of cracks originating from the center button. Like a rock chip on the old windshield of your grandpa’s pickup that inevitably advances to fill the windshield, some Pre owners have reported the same phenomenon.
This issue is not unique to Palm or the Pre, although some cracking issues were also discovered with Palm’s Treo Pro model (yours truly having owned one of the Pros with this issue). However, this could spell very bad news for both Palm and Sprint, particularly since the Pre is the all-eggs-in-one-basket smartphone for Palm and Sprint’s best launch ever. Thankfully Sprint is replacing units for those coming forth with the cracked screens.
Is this a design flaw or an over-excited user mashing down on that button with a bit too much Hulk-like strength? Please let us know here in comments and in the forums if you are one of the unlucky ones with a cracked screen.

The cracking screens seem to radiate from the center button and the problem seems to be widespread. So far Palm is stone walling the issue and perhaps in a state of denial. Whether the problem is a design defect, manufacturing issue or a result of overheating has yet to be determined. Clearly it is up to Palm and Sprint to be open and honest and put this issue behind them by resolving it even if it means stopping sales for an engineering review.
Lets hope Palm and Sprint do the right thing the phone has a lot of great features and potential and screen defects should not be one of them.
i had a related but different issue: i’ve got some lcd damage in upper left, looks like a seep and is tiny, but it bugs me on a new device – and ONE dead pixel in middle of screen!!! i called the sprint store, and they’ll replace it but not until there are replacements to be had, which could be months and months away…boo hooooo
Dead pixels seem to be abounding. I had about 4 on my first Pre, took it back in and exchanged it. I’ve noticed now that the new one has a dead pixel, albeit a small one. grrrr. Regarding the cracking screens – it’s a shame Palm didn’t go with a glass screen.
Same problem here! Bought the phone last Saturday and one week to the day the screen shows an internal crack. Front pocket of my pants and I am a 52 year old network administrator that is so laid back that I wouldn’t bend over to pick up a stray quarter. I feel like a sucker and am awaiting word from Sprint customer service.
I hate feeling like this.
I have an LG Arena with a cracked screen (because i dropped it) does anybody know how i can get a new screen?
I have a crack in the hardware as well. I have never dropped my Palm Pre, but once when I pressed on the screen for an app, a crack appeared.
Sprint says it will not replace the phone without me having to pay a $100 insurance deductible. I tried to explain to Sprint that as dealers for the Palm Pre, they are responsible to their customers for replacing faulty hardware, but to no avail. I have also explained that I’ve been a customer of theirs for 10 years as well as an advocate for the palm pre up until now.
Please continue to contact Sprint about this issue so that they will do right by their customers.
I have a crack on my Pre screen that spreaded from the center button to the top. I have not dropped the phone and never understood where the crack came from. I took the phone to sprint on today and they told me it was my fault and would have to file an insurance claim. All the stories i read online seem to be similar where the user had the phone in his pocket and all of a sudden the screen is cracked. I’m finished with the palm pre and will be selling by phone once a file claim online.
You are incorrect. Sprint is not replacing the Pre’s when presented with a cracked screen. You must be the lucky one. They are also scamming on the rebates. I’m going to contact Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, a strong consumer advocate, about bringing a class action lawsuit against Sprint and Palm. This is a scam and they know it. They are going to ride it out until the lawsuit is filed.
I’ve had this problem with other phones, but so far my Pre is perfect – no problems. I have to admit that I used to put my phone in my back pocket. Not clever, I know. These things aren’t meant to be sat on.
This is exactly what happened to mine. I have had the Pre for 4 months and I am going on my 5th phone. The first one cracked a few days after having it, and the other problems were quickly fixed. This time its cracked exactly like this and Sprint is charging $100 to fix it. I think this is by far the worst phone offered by Sprint, and they should definately do something about it besides continuing to give you the same exact phone.
I think sprint better get off their stupid A$$es and address these problems properly… I know if my company’s stock were in the 3.00 range like theirs is the last thing I would want is customers jumping ship to verizon or att because sprint is refusing to acknowledge a known issue and do right by the consumers…. this will ultimately hurt sprint when the PRE was supposed to be the savior for sprint.
I just signed up for business account and got a new palm pre but my first one is goingback on a personal account for a dead pixels.. I have 30 days to decide if I want to stay with sprint or just abandon ship altogether and go back to a blackberry 8350i on boost mobile…. I guess I’ll have to see how Sprint handles these issues as to whether or not I’ll stay…
You listening Sprint??! You are in no position to be bullying customers around… you could be just as easily filing chapter 11 tomorrow so SMARTEN UP
