Pre a disappointment for Sprint?

The Pre launch back on June 6th was fairly tame and quiet. Yes, stores ran out of stock, but then again, they weren’t stocking them by the hundreds at retail locations like the Apple Stores do for the iPhone. Attention on Sprint and the Palm Pre is also suffering from iPhone 3G S hysteria. Then, if you’ve checked the App Catalog lately, it’s not exactly awe-inspiring. I was willing to give Sprint and Palm kudos for making some apps available right away, but when former Palm OS powerhouse sites start pushing old Palm OS apps for the Pre (by way of using the app “Classic”) because the App Catalog is so lacking, there’s a problem.

To add some insult to injury, both Palm and Sprint stock has been floundering a bit, the Pre hasn’t attracted new subscribers to Sprint in the numbers they had hoped for, and developers are still waiting for a real webOS developer kit to make some Pre apps. If some fun, useful and interesting apps can start making their way into the App Catalog, and at a price that is similar to Apple’s App Store, it would be a good shot in the arm for the Pre. We certainly want Palm to succeed, and the Pre is a device that can get them back in the game and make them relevant again, but the pace better pick up soon or Palm risks the possibility that the Pre and webOS never quite catch on. What do you think Palm and Sprint should do differently?

I’m only hoping that the Palm Pre doesn’t go the way of the old Palm OS Samsung i500. (ahead of its time with voice dialing ‘that worked,’ a removable battery and pocketable flipphone design)

I’m willing to give the Pre some time, but they definitely need to improve on user feature that Palm OS Treo/Centro users have come to expect. I miss many of them already even if I appreciate a great device. Software and missing OS items will kill this phone if Palm doesn’t quickly roll out tweaks.

Hmmmm I think its a little to soon to start spitting out words liket disappointment when it comes to the Pre…and iPhone hysteria really…I don’t think so. I think reporters were the ones that hyped up the Pre and shot out a bunch of left field expectations. 99% of the owner reviews of the Pre I have read were great, and when its time to renew my contract in October I am getting the Pre.

I don’t want to go on a rant about how much I think iPhone’s suck but I am so sick and tired of seeing iPhone and Pre comparisons!

The next Pre update is going to have to be major. Its going to have to include video capabilities and Adobe Flash support for the Browser to name a few things. Then these features have to be advertised. Palm is also going to have to get its app store up and going. The Pre is going to have to match the iPhone 3G s feature for feature (except for the compass) and beat it at its own game. The Pre has the capabilities and the pricing on Sprint in ALOT better than that on AT&T. $99 gets you everything and on AT&T $99 only gets you unlimited minutes. I know everyone hates the Pre iPhone comparisons but like it or not they are the two most popular phones in the game right now. Even though the iPhone has lacked some major functionality in the past, other phones are still attempting to play catch up to it. That means Apple is doing something right.

  4. What's up w/Pre? says:

Well the jacket is off and the Pre is a backslider(no pun intended) for Sprint, I have had mine for over a year now and see that the apps for it are abysmal as compared to the Droid phones/iPhones, etc.
Too bad they could never get the Flash player, speech to txt features to come up on Pre or they (Sprint) would still have a player on their hands. Have to start looking for a replacement later in 2011, sad to say . . . . my 1st smartphone, but w/out Homebrew, next to paltry.
