Better Exchange support coming to Pre with webOS 1.1?

picture-31Anonymous tipsters over at PreCentral.net have delivered some good news for Pre owners who have lamented the limitations of webOS in handling Exchange accounts, particularly when a PIN number is involved. This is one of the dirty little secrets that Sprint salespeople have neglected to share, whether it be from forgetfulness or ignorance, that the Pre doesn’t play well with certain Exchange configurations. Allegedly, webOS 1.1 will address some of these issues, offering better handling of digital certificates, PIN/password support, device wiping (data, not fingerprints), and other security features. This is great news – particularly because it opens the door that much wider for enterprise/corporate users. The update is expected within 30 days or so, but this information is unconfirmed.

Palm: Telefonica divisions get exclusive rights to GSM Pre in Germany, U.K., Ireland and Spain

pre-tnPalm has just announced that divisions of Telefonica will have the exclusive rights to sell the GSM version of the Pre in the U.K., Ireland and Germany (O2) and in Spain (Movistar). As far as a launch date is concerned, the manufacturer said that the handset would be out in time for the holidays which doesn’t really narrow things down, although we’re pretty sure that Arbor Day isn’t the holiday in mind.

Palm’s Spanish division has released the first official photo of the GSM Palm Pre and outside of the HSDPA indicator on the display, you would be hard pressed to find any difference between the CDMA and GSM models on the outside. Last week, we reported on a film shot by some Vietnamese individuals that showed the GSM version of the handset and now we have the official word from Palm. A couple of items were not revealed in the press release, such as the frequencies used by the radios on the GSM Pre, and pricing.

Check out the via link for Palm’s lengthy press release.

WebOS confirmed to receive Dataviz’s Docs to Go later this year

Palm Pre owners have been limited with apps and most likely downloaded all 30 that are available on the App Catalog. Business users like the ability to view Office files such as Word or Excel directly on their handset, but the lack of being able to edit them can limit their productivity on the go. Good news though with DataViz, creator of the popular Documents to Go software for mobile devices, confirming that it is in the works to offer the app on the WebOS platform later this year. It’s great that WebOS users are going to get the application, but now the waiting game commences. Let’s cross our fingers and hope that “later this year” will mean towards the early second portion of the year.

Wikipedia Mobile compatible with Pre

picture-3We are still waiting with bated breath for Palm to approve more apps and make them available in the App Catalog, but that certainly doesn’t slow down the likes of the Wikimedia Foundation from officially launching a mobile optimized version of Wikipedia for high-end smartphones. The current version of Wikipedia supports the Palm Pre, iPhone, Kindle and Android platforms. The mobile version of Wikipedia plays very well with the Pre. Users are automatically redirected to the mobile version with the option at the bottom of the web page to view the standard page or disable the mobile version permanently. Also, the Pre’s universal search is also compatible with mobile Wikipedia. Try it out now and tell us what you think!

Palm Pre, App Catalog getting more apps soon?

comments

appcatalogAlthough it is rumor and conjecture, this is the kind of rumor and conjecture that goes well with fireworks, ice cream and apple pie – that the App Catalog may soon swell with long-awaited third-party apps for the Pre, beginning as early as next week. Allegedly, a number of developers accepted to the Early Access program have reported that Palm has given them the green light to submit their apps for consideration for the Beta App Catalog.

More apps in the App Catalog is not only good news, but in our opinion, it is vital to Palm’s success. With competition like the iPhone and an iTunes App Store bursting at the seams with thousands of apps, something better happen quick to keep the Pre relevant and interesting, and like it or not, even if the native apps on the Pre are fantastic and whiz-bang, it’s not enough in today’s app-hungry world to remain competitive. If you see some apps starting to appear, let us know what pops up!

No Pre for Sprint, Best Buy and Radio Shack employees

comments

picture-2It must be torture to be a Sprint, Best Buy or Radio Shack store employee right now and unbox, set up, and sell the Palm Pre to everyone else but not have one in your own pocket. According to an alleged internal memo reported by Sprint Gurus, effective 6/29/09, store employees and Advantage Club members will have no Pre joy until supply shortages ease. It’s like being an Oompa-Loompa in Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory and never knowing what a snozberry tastes like. Hang in there, employees. If supply doesn’t improve for a while, there’s always eBay.

Palm Pre GSM going to O2 in the UK?

palm-pre-gsm-going-to-o2-in-the-uk_tnAs it became clear yesterday, Palm is about to reveal details on the Pre’s UK launch pretty soon. Now, a word has spread that O2 has already acquired the exclusive rights for the device. According to The Guardian, what Palm is going to announce next week is that it has signed a deal with the carrier, so that it would be the only one in the UK to offer the Pre, just like it did with the iPhone. This actually confirms a rumor from March, going that O2 owner Telefonica is to take care of the webOS smartphone across a number of Latin American and European countries, including Spain and the UK.

Palm Pre goes PlayStation

comments

And who said the Palm Pre is not good for gaming? Well, the web nature of the operating system might come with some limitations, but hey, if running a PlayStation emulator is possible then so is real gaming on the Pre! ZodTTD, the individual who is responsible for some of the best jailbroken iPhone emulators, is now developing a Pre version of the PlayStation 1 emulator, psx4all. You can watch a video demonstration of the webOS smartphone running a PS1 game below.

Interestingly, it seems the Pre puts up a better performance than Apple’s newly launched iPhone 3GS, according to the developer. However, there are still some issues that need to be fixed before everything’s ready like sound output, screen rotation, scaling, etc. In addition, ZodTTD has plans to port other emulator projects to the Pre, such as Game Boy Advance and TurboGrafx-16.
