Bell nukes unlimited data plan

comments

Screen shot 2009-11-05 at 11.42.28 PMBad news for Canadian Pre owners on the Bell network. It looks like Bell is jumping on the bandwagon of limited data plans along with Rogers and Telus. Their new data plans range from $45 for 500 MB of monthly data and up to $100 a month for 2 GB of data. Existing Bell subscribers will not have to worry about the new plans (yet), but it’s only a matter of time. Limited data is a true bummer, so our hearts go out to our Canadian Pre-owning neighbors. If you’re currently Pre’ing on Bell’s network, what’s your take on this?

Bell drops price of Palm Pre to $99.95

Screen shot 2009-11-04 at 10.29.49 PMWhat could be better than buying a Palm Pre on Bell for $149.95? How about buying a Pre on the Bell network for $99.95 (3-year contract required) with their new HSPA network? The Pre is facing stiff competition with the likes of the  8GB iPhone, also selling for $99, so this price drop is a good move to remain a viable option for new smartphone buyers.

Verizon to charge up to $350 early termination

Screen shot 2009-11-04 at 4.59.58 PMIt appears that Verizon is closing a loophole that some users have benefited from in the past. Once upon a time, Verizon users could open a second line of service, take advantage of a promo for a free high-end phone (i.e., BlackBerry Storm 2), pay a termination fee of $175, and sell the new phone on eBay for $300 or more. Starting November 15th, Verizon is raising their termination fee for really expensive “advanced devices” to $350. This fee decreases $10 per month through the life of a user’s contract. It’s certainly understandable why Verizon has made this move, but it’s unfortunate that a few people, by their actions, caused this fee increase in the first place. What do you think?

An ad by Sprint reveals the Palm Pixi sports Wi-Fi

The second webOS handset, the Palm Pixi is due in the US on 15 November, but certainly the advertising campaign has already started. It will be one of Sprint´s leading devices to hit the shelves around the holidays. The really interesting thing, however, is the dedicated page shows the phone actually supports Wi-Fi. Quite odd really, since it´s the first time such an information has appeared. We guess this is a mistake that will be fixed soon, although we cannot help thinking what a nice surprise it would be if the manufacturer was to add a Wi-Fi module at the eleventh hour. Miracles do happen, especially around Christmas, don´t they?

palm-pre-dstIn case you’re showing up to all your appointments an hour early, here’s a hint: Daylight Savings Time ended early Sunday morning and you should have turned your clock back an hour. Well, apparently some Pre phones are behaving badly as a result of the time change, exhibiting behavior like message timestamp malfunctions and some calendar issues. If you have had these issues with your own Pre, hopefully they have cleared up by now. Let us know if you had any issues and if you are still having them.

Also included are Dallas-Ft. Worth in Texas and Chicago, Illinois. Sprint claims to be on schedule for 80 markets covered with 4G by 2010, WiMax speeds reaching over 10Mbps download and 4Mbps upload. Those speeds aren’t too shabby for your Pre. Check out the 4G Speed Test video:

Palm giving devs early access to webOS updates

Screen shot 2009-10-30 at 11.06.47 AMPalm has let it be known that developers will now have early access to any future webOS updates so that they can maintain app compatibility in advance of OS updates that would have crippled apps in the past. This can be a huge headache for developers, costing them time and money. Other platforms already do this — take Apple, for instance. iPhone app developers get early access to software updates, before they reach the public, so that they can provide seamless compatibility for their customers. Kudos to Palm for getting this done!

New webOS build for Palm Pixi?

comments
2

New webOS build for Palm PixiDSL Reports keeps a log of which devices access their system for speed tests and a precentral reader passed on the interesting info that a device called the Pixi, using webOS 1.2.9, went through a speed test and was logged into the DSL Reports system. This should be enough evidence to expect the Pixi to ship with an upgraded version of webOS at launch. The question remains, will it be 1.2.9 or version 1.3? The Sprint model of the Pre currently is loaded with version 1.2.1 of the webOS software. The new OS is expected to have a new Facebook app sourced from Palm, and Synergy integration with Yahoo and Linkedin. The Pixi is set to be released on November 15th at Sprint, for a price of $99.99 after a mail-in-rebate and your signature on a 2 year contract.
