Palm Pixi with WiFi clears FCC, headed to Verizon?

When the Pixi was Screen shot 2009-12-13 at 11.59.29 PMScreen shot 2009-12-13 at 11.57.29 PMfirst released on Sprint, one of the big drawbacks when compared to the Pre was lack of WiFi. Evidence from the FCC suggests that those wanting a WiFi’d Pixi may be in luck very soon.

A CDMA Palm Pixi has been tested for 802.11b/g WiFi by the FCC and given Verizon’s gearing up for Palm webOS-based handsets for early next year, it’s likely a Pixi with WiFi capability will show up on Verizon. Are you headed to Sprint for a Pixi now, or are you willing to wait a little longer to see what shows up on Verizon?

AT&T-branded Palm Pixi allegedly spotted in wild

Screen shot 2009-12-10 at 7.20.12 PMA reliable source has told PreCentral that they spotted an AT&T-branded Palm Pixi out in the wild, more specifically on San Francisco mass transit. There is no picture available to make visual confirmation, so the existence of an AT&T Palm Pixi will have to be taken on faith. Of special interest is the branding of the device with AT&T – branding is usually not a practice performed well in advance of a phone release so if this phone is already branded, then the release may be mere months away.

T-O2 Czech Republic to launch Palm Pre in 2010

Screen shot 2009-12-09 at 12.21.58 AMGood news for Palm Pre fans in the Czech Republic. Sometime early in 2010, T-O2 should be releasing the webOS-based Pre for it’s customers once they have finished testing the device on their network. T-O2, a subsidiary of Telefonica, already offers the Pre in Germany, Spain, and the UK, and more European countries should come.

As more carriers and countries offer the Pre, the more entrenched Palm will be in the smartphone world. Hopefully the Pre will be popular in the Czech Republic. What do you think?

Early Christmas: get Pre for $24.95 at WirelessWave (Canada only)

Screen shot 2009-12-08 at 4.59.31 PMUsually it doesn’t pay to procrastinate until near the very end before finalizing your Christmas shopping, but WirelessWave is bringing Christmas a little early this year for Canadians by offering a steep discount for the Palm Pre — only $24.95. This incredible price drop will require a 3-year commitment, but that seems a small price to pay (along with only $24.95) to experience the joys of the Pre and the webOS operating system.

Class action lawsuit targets Palm and Sprint backup

comments

Screen shot 2009-12-08 at 1.41.43 AMWe may live in a litigious society, but class action lawsuits are often effective in twisting the arms of big companies to make right what they may do wrong, and now Palm and Sprint are in the legal crosshairs. According to a class action suit filed on behalf of Jason Standiford and others similarly affected, the plaintiffs seek “relief for the loss of personal data suffered” when Palm allegedly loses customer data in the backup process.

Palm and Sprint advertise that their webOS-based phones (Pre and Pixi) can reliably backup user data in the case of a lost or damaged phone or other causes of lost data. However, there have been problems with Palm’s backup via Sprint (over-the-air) and important data of customers has been lost. In order to hold Palm and Sprint accountable, the class action suit has been filed. Who do you think will prevail?

Sprint to offer pink Palm Pixi handsets?

Sprint to offer pink Palm Pixi handsets1The guys at the blog PreCentral have managed to get their hands on a picture from the internal database of Sprint that mentions pink version of the Palm Pixi. Another piece of evidence that confirms the existence of the color solution comes from the Buyback website of the carrier, where you can easily notice the Palm 120 Pixi – Pink. The fact that a handset is buyback approved means it is to roll out very shortly. This is good news for all ladies who happen to be fans of smartphones, because the Palm Pixi is an extremely likeable device and we believe pink will make it even more appealing to the fairer sex. We hope that Palm releases the handset in various color solutions, just like they did with the Palm Centro.

Storage limit to be removed with WebOS 1.3.5?

Storage limit to be removed with WebOS 1.3.5If you’ve owned a Palm Pre during its heyday over the summer, then you probably were downloading every single application available on the App Catalog. Although a good majority of those programs didn’t seem to be big winners, with a small percentage being considered app worthy, owners of the venerable WebOS handset didn’t need to worry about overloading their Pre’s with useless apps. Now that development for the WebOS has been made available for some time, Palm Pre and Pixi owners have been facing a dilemma that didn’t seem too problematic in the beginning – which is the cap on app installations on either WebOS devices. Apparently though, there are some confirmations through anonymous sources that the latest version 1.3.5 of WebOS will clear the way to allow as many applications to be installed on a device. So if you’re the type to literally download every single program made available on the App Catalog, then you may find this news somewhat eye opening. No other information has been revealed about what else the next version will offer – but expect it to land sometime in the next few weeks.

Ellen DeGeneres Show audience gets free Palm Pixi phones

Screen shot 2009-12-04 at 2.36.02 AMIn the spirit of Christmas, screaming audience members were more than delighted (crazed, in fact) to receive a free Palm Pixi as part of Ellen’s “12 Days of Giveaways”. Along with the Palm Pixi, the audience members scored several other super-gadgets just in time for the holidays, but the one that is near and dear to our hearts is the Palm Pixi.

It’s nice to see the Pixi get some good airtime on national television and hopefully those audience members will be able to appreciate how lucky they really are. Will a Palm Pixi show up in your stocking in time for Christmas?

webOS 1.3.2 fixes Pixi security issues

comments

Screen shot 2009-12-02 at 3.54.23 PMPalm released the webOS 1.3.2 update for the Pixi last night, and according to the release notes, you can expect a security patch and a small bug fix for your updating troubles. The phone update fixed a bug where answering and hanging up phone calls with a wired headset button was previously acting unreliably. On a more vague note, the security patch “addresses several security issues with Palm webOS software.”

It may not be very exciting stuff, but it’s nice to see Palm be on top of things by providing these updates on a regular basis. For all of you Pre owners out there, hopefully we will soon see the webOS 1.3.5 update very soon.

Rumor Mill: webOS 1.3.5 update coming mid-December?

comments

Screen shot 2009-12-02 at 1.44.36 AMIt’s only a rumor from an O2 representative in Germany, but we love us our rumors, so here it is: webOS 1.3.5 is coming soon and will fix an SMS bug in the GSM Pre that inexplicably decreases the character limit to 70 when a special character is entered. Other fixes should be included as well, and hopefully the app limit issue will be addressed.

Keep checking your GSM Pre for the app update that may arrive in the middle of this month. Just consider it an early Christmas present from Palm.
