Almost as suddenly as paid apps magically appeared in the App Catalog, the apps have been quickly removed by Palm due to a big flaw in purchase verification. This security oversight was allowing certain shady individuals to build dummy applications in order to dupe the App Catalog into downloading free “updates” and circumvent paying for the app altogether. What a shame that some would exploit a weakness in the App Catalog to dishonestly download apps, but on a positive note, Palm pulled the apps until the backdoor can be closed. Palm plans on having the App Catalog back up and running by the morning.

It has been a glorious day for Palm Pre owners and webOS fans. The App Catalog finally contains apps for purchase, bolstering the future of webOS app development as developers can make some money for their apps and consumers can enjoy higher-quality apps. Not only are there a plethora of paid apps now in the App Catalog, but free apps have also been added. As you can see, the counter stands at 125 apps and growing. These are humble beginnings, but now the floodgates are hopefully open wide and webOS fans have an ever-brighter future to look forward to.

Palm’s App Catalog may be getting paid apps on September 24th, but free apps continue to pour in, so get them now while they are still free. It’s difficult to say which method is more preferred – one or two new apps at a time, maybe each day, or an injection en masse of new apps like these latest fifteen. Either way, it’s nice to see more and more apps, and perhaps with paid apps in the Catalog soon, we’ll see the floodgates open. Until then, here are the latest additions: Chess for webOS, DeadMan, Ditto, Dot Game, Hebrew Calendar Trial Version, MediPDA, P2GoogleVoice, P2Snippets, Pic Hunt – Pets, Pic Hunt – Space Explorer, Pic Hunt – Vintage Cars, Reversi, Send My Location for webOS, Survivor Samoa, and TipCalc.

It’s been a long time coming and is crucial for the survival of Palm and webOS, given stiff and nearly insurmountable competition like Apple’s App Store – Palm’s App Catalog is finally getting paid applications. Developers rejoice! Not only should developers rejoice because they can put some coin in their pockets, but WE should rejoice also. Why? Because PAID developers tend to create more and better apps when they stand to make a few bucks, and if the apps are of good quality and design, as well as useful and/or fun, we will gladly pay for them. September 24th is the day to enter into your Pre’s calendar.

The latest to be churned out by the rumor mill concerns the new App Catalog for the Palm Pre (and soon, the Pixi). According to a tip to PreCentral from an anonymous source, the new App Catalog will be unveiled on September 24th. The significance of the new App Catalog is that users can set up an account with Palm and buy apps directly. No longer will Sprint (or any other carriers) have their mitts in the App Catalog, and we think that’s a good thing. Instead, Palm and the app developers will have control and the app buying experience should be better for all. The 24th isn’t far away so stay tuned.

Promises were made that more apps would come, and those promises are being fulfilled, albeit quietly. As of yesterday, six (6) new apps have appeared in the App Catalog, and without further ado, here’s the list of newbies:
- Word Ace – according to Self Aware Games: “The Word Ace application for Palm webOS™ combines the strategy and competition of Texas Hold ‘Em and the intellectual challenge of Scrabble®-like word creation into a fast-paced, challenging multiplayer online game you carry in your pocket. Do you have the cards and the skill to build the highest-scoring word, or are you going to have to bluff your way to victory?”
- Mileage Monitor - pretty much self-explanatory.
- Bubbles! – connect same-color bubbles and pop them for points.
- ESPN Zoom – photo hunt game.
- Kosher2Go – Kosher database app.
- Shabbat Shalom – check candle lighting times, havdalah time, and parsha for the week in any location worldwide.
Keep an eye on the App Catalog for more apps. As Palm has promised, there are more to come.

Palm’s App Catalog is growing by a trickle rather than a flood, but any new apps for the masses are more than welcome. Case in point, two new apps have appeared for your downloading pleasure: Blackout from Uberu, a lights out style of game, and Spades from Bytesequencing, a version of the classic card game. Both apps are at a very attractive price – FREE! The Spades app is ad-supported.
Give them a download and let us know what you think. Also, what apps do you want to see in the App Catalog?

While we wait and wait for more apps to become available in the App Catalog for the Palm Pre, we can at least whet our appetite with news of new apps that will eventually be available to us for download. Later this year, VOXOFON will have a VoIP app available to Pre users. This app will facilitate placing low-cost international calls from the Pre, even without a Wi-Fi connection. Also, there are no contracts, subscriptions or recurring fees to worry about. Now we just need the App Catalog to deliver.

We reported a few weeks ago that more apps were coming soon to the App Catalog, and finally this is coming to pass – two new apps are now available, OpenTable and Fliq Bookmarks. OpenTable helps you find a restaurant nearest you, with functionality like adding to your Calendar and getting directions. Fliq Bookmarks is an expansion of the Missing Sync app and allows you to sync Safari bookmarks from your Mac computer.
Yes, the addition of two apps is nothing to write home about, but it’s like waiting in a really long line that hasn’t moved much, then suddenly lurches forward several steps and inspires hope that someday you’ll get to the front. Keep an eye on the App Catalog – Palm promises that this is just the beginning.
