Palm paying developers for webOS apps

Tags: , , ,

It’s a common practice for a smartphone company to pay for 3rd party bundled apps and licensing apps for their devices, but usually developers will flock to a popular platform to make apps for it. In an interview with the founders of CitySourced, a new mobile app, TechCrunch interviewer Sarah Lacy learns that developers are being paid by Palm to bring webOS version of their apps to market. Is this a way for Palm to boost sales by bringing popular apps to their webOS platform, or are they showing a hint of desperation because popular app developers are not confident enough in sales to invest in developing their apps for webOS? What do you think? Take a look at the video to see for yourself:

Palm’s App Catalog reaches one million downloads

palms-app-catalog-reaches-one-million-downloads_1

It is estimated that about 150,000 Palm Pre units have been sold to date, as we said yesterday. However, it looks like these guys just can’t help but install new applications on their webOS-powered smartphones. According to New York-based mobile analytics company Medialets, the users have already downloaded a total of one million apps from Palm’s App Catalog. That figure really sounds like a lot, especially having in mind there are only 30 apps currently available on the storefront (all of which are free). That said, we certainly hope to see more and more mobile programs surface on App Catalog soon enough.
