Adobe’s message on the Pre: Flash 10.1 coming to webOS first half of 2010

Tags: , , , , , , ,

Visit the download page for Adobe Flash from an iPhone and Adobe tells you in no uncertain terms whose fault it is that the software will not play on your device. “Apple restricts use of technologies required by products like Flash Player. Until Apple eliminates these restrictions, Adobe cannot provide Flash Player for the iPhone or iPod Touch,” says the writing in the box.

Now we take a look at what it says when you try to get Flash from a device using webOS. “Adobe Flash Player is coming to Palm’s webOS in the first half of 2010.” This is certainly exciting news for Pre owners and might actually be enough to sway those sitting on the fence to land on the side of the fence belonging to Palm’s handset. Besides the Pre, there is also talk that the recently launched Motorola DROID will be getting Flash 10 support in the first half of next year. This looks to leave Apple out in the cold unless they start playing nice with Adobe. Remember Apple, pride comes before a fall.

webOS is no good for gaming, says an iPhone developer

Tags: , , , , , , ,

webos-is-no-good-for-gaming-says-iphone-developer_tnAlthough we knew that games are in development for the Pre, it seems the webOS platform still has a long way to go until it is ready to support high-quality graphics and complex gameplay elements, such as the ones found in certain games for the iPhone (let alone the 3GS). The main reason for this, as iPhone dev Craig A. Hunter states, is the web-oriented environment provided by the current webOS SDK beta, which got available some days ago. Actually, the biggest problem is that as of now, developers do not have access to OpenGL, although the Pre supports it. In addition, the current 4 Hz sampling of raw accelerometer data seem to be pretty insufficient, compared to the required minimum of 20 Hz for accelerometer-controled apps.

Have no fear though, as PreCentral has got a Palm job listing unearthed, revealing that the company is seeking for a Game Frameworks Engineer that would help improve the platform’s gaming capabilities. With that said, we should also point out that Apple also didn’t have the breathtaking visual up and running right from the start.

Sprint and Pre take a jab at AT&T and iPhone

Tags: , , ,

picture-4Competition: it’s what the free marketplace thrives on and usually results in a big win for the consumer. Sprint and Palm appear to be more than willing to take up the mantle of David and sling some well-aimed stones at the Goliath of AT&T and the iPhone.

In an ad posted on Sprint’s Facebook page, Sprint pulls no punches in pointing out a few advantages with joining their carrier and taking home a Palm Pre: 1) running multiple apps at the same time, 2) real-time updates, 3) save $1200 over two years with their aggressive calling/data plans, and 4) the first 4G network in the wings. Note also the timeliness of this advertising – going after the original iPhone customers now that their 2-year contract is up.

Keep swinging, Sprint and Palm. After all, you won’t land every punch, but you only land a punch if you are swinging away.

Man buys Pre and then smashes his iPhone

Tags: , , ,

111A guy named John had been using a first-gen iPhone and whether it was the frustration of using EDGE or wanting a replaceable battery, he decided to go out and buy a Palm Pre. Okay, nothing out of the ordinary so far and certainly some Pre purchasers whipped out their credit cards this weekend to replace their iPhone with Palm’s new touchscreen handset. It was what happened after John took his new phone home that really was unique.

If you were to buy a Palm Pre to replace an iPhone, what would you do with the latter device? Some would immediately put it up for sale on Ebay. Others might pass it on to a sibling or give it to a friend. And there would be some who would just stick it in a drawer just in case it was needed later. But no one could have guessed what our friend John did with his iPhone. Grabbing a steel hammer out of his toolbox, he smashed his old phone beyond repair.

Maybe John was angry with Apple and the iPhone. Or perhaps it was AT&T that set him off. Either way, it proves that no matter how indestructable a touchscreen might claim to be, all it takes is a few swings with a decidely low tech weapon like a hammer to destroy it.

Pre caught in the wild… again! The shots shows YouTube app and iPhone comparison

Tags: , , ,

With the hopeful launch of the Palm Pre almost imminent, there is an increasing amount of pictures being taken in the wild. The latest batch shows off a YouTube and email application running on the device. There is also another shot that compares it against the iPhone. The two giants will probably battle to see who will reign supreme among the cream of the crop this summer. Now the only thing left needed is just a hard street date for the release and pricing. Hopefully there will be more information to come in the near future!

Angelina Jolie likes the Pre better than the iPhone?

Tags: , , , ,

anjelina-jolie-likes-pre-software-better-than-iphone-one_webosHey, this sure is one catchy title up there, but do you know what the best part is? It might be real… We know that Howard Stern said he prefers the Bold to the Pre, but it seems that our favorite movie star, Angelina Jolie, likes webOS much more than iPhone OS, at least according to a production assistant on the set of Salt – an upcoming espionage thriller. In addition, another feature she is said to like is the QWERTY keyboard, with the only drawback that the keys aren’t big enough.  When it comes to the screen, she seems to like the image quality, but also notes that it might be too easy to scratch.

And while the Pre has been enjoying the attention of the loving hands of Lara Croft herself, the device has also appeared on Sprint’s Mobile Business site, giving yet another sign that the actual release is drawing nearer. Sadly, no official date or price have been mentioned.

Apple angry to those ripping their ideas, Palm doesn’t care

Tags:

Last week, Apple’s Tim Cook mentioned that the Cuppertino based company likes competition, but not one that is ripping their intellectual property (IP) off. Although he didn’t mention exact company, many noted that he may point to Palm, as the WebOS has some fancy iPhone-like gestures. Palm doesn’t stay still, and its spokeperson, Lynn Fox said:

Palm has a long history of innovation that is reflected in our products and robust patent portfolio (31 pages of patents in Google Patent Search), and we have long been recognized for our fundamental patents in the mobile space …. If faced with legal action, we are confident that we have the tools necessary to defend ourselves.

Obviously, Palm is sure abouts its features.
