It’s only a rumor from an O2 representative in Germany, but we love us our rumors, so here it is: webOS 1.3.5 is coming soon and will fix an SMS bug in the GSM Pre that inexplicably decreases the character limit to 70 when a special character is entered. Other fixes should be included as well, and hopefully the app limit issue will be addressed.
Keep checking your GSM Pre for the app update that may arrive in the middle of this month. Just consider it an early Christmas present from Palm.

A user at the SprintUsers forums has posted some info about an upcoming Palm Pre software update, due to be released “on or near 7/22/09”. bigchico68 claims to have received the list of changes via e-mail, sent by Sprint. So, with that said, it seems the demo software found on the Pre will cease to exist upon updating the device. In addition, Facebook users will be able to keep their friends synchronized with a PC. SMS messages will become more colorful, thanks to the added support for emoticons. Another minor change will enable the enter key to start your YouTube search. However, whether Sprint is really to roll out this update, we will know sometime around Wednesday.

Palm is now sending the webOS 1.0.4 firmware to its Pre users. Apparently, the new update fixes a number of security issues, which seems to have been discovered thanks to Townsend Ladd Harris (a Pre homebrewer). Palm has thanked him publicly, and the company is now inviting everyone who would want to help make the platform better and safer. Unfortunately for application homebrewers, Palm has made installing apps via e-mail impossible (for now). This is also an important security measure, since who knows what malevolent content might be sent to you someday. Still, apps that you have already installed this way will continue to work.

Palm has released a software update for webOS to version 1.0.2. What it brings is more stability to the system, as well as a new alarm clock, since it looks like some people have previously experienced data loss and had to use the Palm Profile backup utility to restore their settings. You can update your Palm Pre through the Update option, under the programs menu and you won’t have to quit your other work while the 67MB update is being downloaded.
